Subject:Signature to identify. Japanese or Chinese ?
Posted By: Fahre Tue, Sep 22, 2020 IP: 109.88.102.137

Hello,

I have on a pretty porcelain cup, it's signature on the back in blue color.

Could you help me identify her, is she Japanese or Chinese.

Thank you

The cup strives to imitate imperial ware of the 19th century Xianfeng reign (1851-61) with a rare underglaze blue mark of 'Da qing Xian feng nian zhi' (大清咸豐年製), 'Made during the Xianfeng period of the Great Qing Dynasty'. However, the mark is calligraphically deficient in its flourishes, in my opinion. Compare to the photo below of a rather quintessential Xianfeng imperial mark. Most period minyao (popular kiln) marks I've seen were in iron red.

Best regards,

Bill H.
