Subject:Chinese Calligraphy/Woodblock sign. identification

Would any of the experts in this field be able to identify the "signature" and possibly age? Bought 20 years ago at Leslie Hindman Auction (Chicago) and currently had framed. How to destinguish if Calligraphy or Woodblock? I believe it is Chinese, a native Chinese translated "signature" as E-Mei Mountain Studio? Thanks for the input

I have been able to find the seal on a couple of Chinese websites. It reads ShengShan Han Mo, or "the elegant ink of ShengShan".

But I couldn't find any copies of your paintings/prints. However, they do look familiar. I am sure I have seen them illustrated somewhere. I just can't remember where.

The web sites show many examples of paintings with the seal - subjects are almost always animals, often horses - but more representational.

Thanks for your input. Would you be so kind and send me links to chinese websites where I can find these seals?

Thanks Jerry

A close comparison of the 2 seal impressions shows that they are from different carved sources. This fact makes me certain that they are woodblocks rather than original paintings.

If they were original paintings, the seal impressions might show printing differences due to varied inking and pressure, but they would have come from the same carved source.

I can't make head nor tail out of the seal, but the artwork looks remarkably like that of Yoshijiro Urushibara

Thanks Mark for pointing out the differences in the two seal impressions. Yes there are variances, which could easily be the result of being a wood cut rather than a seal impression, but I think the similarities are so close that they were both carved from impressions of the same seal.

In addition, the configuration of the seal is as close as I can determine from the Chinese websites I searched. Granted the seal impressions were so small as to preclude absolute certainty, but close enough.

To Geo, I am not familiar with the work of Yoshijiro Urushibara, but the seal in Japanese would read: Seizan or Shozan Kamboku. Does this have any relevance to your artist?

MikeOz,

No, the only seals I've seen associated with the artist either read "Yoshijiro" or "Mokuchu".

This style of horse prints doesn't really seem to be representative of the artist, but take a look here:
http://www.artelino.com/archive/artists.asp?art=1144&alp=m

I'm not all that familiar with his work myself, I've just stumbled upon the horse prints a few times, and they always were attributed to him.

Personally, I like his "shin-hanga" style of work much better...

Hello, it has been 10 years since you posted this question regarding the beautiful horse block prints so this may be irrelevant now. However, if anyone is interested, I recently found one of the two prints you posted myself and came up with the following from internet search. The artist isYoshijiro Urushibara. He went by more than one name which is why you see different seals on some of his work.
