Subject:Chinese Calligraphy/Woodblock sign. identification
Posted By: JK Sun, Aug 19, 2007 IP: 209.225.96.103 Would any of the experts in this field be able to identify the "signature" and possibly age? Bought 20 years ago at Leslie Hindman Auction (Chicago) and currently had framed. How to destinguish if Calligraphy or Woodblock? I believe it is Chinese, a native Chinese translated "signature" as E-Mei Mountain Studio? Thanks for the input |

Posted By: mikeoz Sun, Aug 19, 2007 I have been able to find the seal on a couple of Chinese websites. It reads ShengShan Han Mo, or "the elegant ink of ShengShan". |

Posted By: Marc Kahn Mon, Aug 20, 2007 A close comparison of the 2 seal impressions shows that they are from different carved sources. This fact makes me certain that they are woodblocks rather than original paintings. |

Posted By: geo. Mon, Aug 20, 2007 I can't make head nor tail out of the seal, but the artwork looks remarkably like that of Yoshijiro Urushibara |

Posted By: mikeoz Wed, Aug 22, 2007 Thanks Mark for pointing out the differences in the two seal impressions. Yes there are variances, which could easily be the result of being a wood cut rather than a seal impression, but I think the similarities are so close that they were both carved from impressions of the same seal. |

Posted By: Judy Bridges Mon, Nov 06, 2017 Hello, it has been 10 years since you posted this question regarding the beautiful horse block prints so this may be irrelevant now. However, if anyone is interested, I recently found one of the two prints you posted myself and came up with the following from internet search. The artist isYoshijiro Urushibara. He went by more than one name which is why you see different seals on some of his work. |
