Subject:Peking glass vase with Qianlong mark
Posted By: Mike Tue, Feb 05, 2008 IP: 67.53.0.10

I'm seeking comments on this Peking glass vase I found recently. It stands about 8.25 inches tall and is comprised of three layers of glass: white, pink, and green, respectively from the inside out. The base bears a four-character Qianlong mark in regular script. There are scratches all over the base, and around the body, and there are also a few minor chips here and there, but otherwise in excellent condition.

My question is whether this could be a period piece or later?

(Will post additional photos once this message has been posted.)

My guess is pre-WWII. Less than 80 years old.

Wingchuntaiji, you have posted a very interesting observation. Please elaborate so that we can learn more about dating Peking glass.
Thnx in advance,
Alan

Dear Alan,

I only have an average knowledge on Peking Glasses, and my focus on Peking Glass is on snuff bottles. I have seen quite a few good Peking Glass ware, but I do not own a lot of Peking Glasses.

I matched with my memory of what I had seen, and basing on the pictures and descriptions. This is obviously a Min Kuo item(Nationalist Chinese) which is supposed to be early 1900's to WWI. But, the reign was stamped(for larger volume), that pushed the production time at least 20 more years later. Therefore my estimate is that the vase is probably slightly before WWII.

Randy -

Thank you for the feedback.

The Qianlong reign mark appears to have been scratched, or carved, into the base, not stamped. I'll include a close-up.

I've not seen such dragons on either Peking glass, or porcelain, for that matter, which made me suspicious about it being from the Qianlong period. Given the overal wear evident on the vase, however, I believe it does have some age - Republic period seems correct.

Kind regards,
Mike

Are the person selling this on ebay ? , if yes it is a very nice vase, but I still think you are asking too much. The vase is late 19th c. IMHO, the pink / green /white combo seems much used in that period, I am including a pic of a similar vase in the book (Treasures of Chinese Glass Work Shops 1997), which is dated to the 19th c. and also a vase in my own collection which I feel confident dating later 19th c., Greg
