Hello

I have bought a new kuchi-e ( 口絵 - frontispiece)

From what I could read, it is by Takeuchi Keishuu ( 武内桂舟 ).

Can someone please tell me what the scene represents?

It shows Raijin ( 雷神 ), the God of Thunder, a noble man with a falcon (perhaps Genji according to his hairdo), a noble woman with a wisteria branch, and a bunch of servents, more or less hairy...

Hi François , I cannot tell you what this scene shows but I can say the 'noblewoman' is actually the 'wisteria maiden' Fuji Hime, related to the original creation gods of Japan. I suspect the shadow image in the background is important but I dont know what it depicts

I have got an answer from a Japanese antiques' dealer friend.

The print shows actually the characters of ootsu-e (new years wish-cards, now a days), but all put together as in an ukiyo-e.

The shadow character is Raijin, the God of Thunder
