Subject:Early Guangxu Vase?
Posted By: Brian Mon, Nov 22, 2010 IP: 96.229.61.164

This vase is marked for the Jiaqing Period, but the form and decoration appears later maybe Guangxu--1870s-1890s? Any thought?

This piece is also a post year 2000 fake. The color of some of the enamel is off while others are correct and the painting is not as well executed or as refine as 1900s replica or as detailed as a jiajing piece. The mark is a tracing or a photocopy and the color is constant in intensity across the strokes. The grease is also a give away.

I think it's probably late 20th century. The mark shows no gradation of color, which is characteristic of strokes made with a wet brush in the human hand. This deficiency may signify the mark is a computer-generated transfer.

I may be mistaken, but I believe Jiaqing marks typically are written under white glaze, often reserved in a patch of it, instead of under turquoise glaze like this. Perhaps someone else can verify that point.

Best regards,

Thanks Bill, all of the "Mark and of the Period" Jiaqing porcelain I've ever seen has a red seal on a white square against the teal green background. I've had some people at auction houses that specialize in Asian works of art and they said it was probably early Guangxu period (1870s-1880s) with either an apocryphal or later (recently) added Jiaqing mark on top of an authentic late 19th Century piece. Any other comments would be appreciated.

I reviewed several sources, including both major catalogs of the Weishaupt Collection of late Qing wares and the Liu Liang-yu tome on Qing ceramics and couldn't find a blue Jiaqing mark under anything resembling turquoise or teal glaze, though there was evidence of it being placed under celadon glaze. Among Jiaqing marks in the 1987 Weishaupt catalog, there's one on a cornflower blue vase and another on a turquoise vase, both reserved under square fields of white surrounded by turquoise glaze.

Most other Jiaqing marks in my references are in iron red over white glaze but not all of them appear to be surrounded by turquoise or teal glaze, and some are impressed into the base under yellow glazes. The real common thread seems to be they're in zhuanshu seal script.

If for no other reasons, I still believe this vase probably is late 20th century because the mark has no texture and the vase itself has that telltale look of rubbed-on crankcase oil and dust that fakesters use to make their copies look old.

Best regards,

Bill H.
