Subject:Zhong porcelain mark??
Posted By: joe Fri, Mar 18, 2011 IP: 69.121.6.98

Can anyone tell me what porcelain mark this is? I believe it may be Zhong due to the Arrow symbol? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

This is a contemporary mark of 'Made at Jingdezhen in China' (Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi). I've edited your photo to show the proper position for reading it downward from the top right.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello Joe,

I think the whole translation is: "Zhong Guo Jingdezhen zhi" or "China Jingdezhen made" in English.(Zhong character should be up-right). Made 1970 or later.

Regards,

Arjan

Thank you both for all your help. I searched through the book "Marks on Chinese Ceramics", by Gerald Davidson and was unable to find it. (its possible I could have just missed it with the thousands of marks published in the book). Would either one of you and or anyone else recommend any other books I can use for reference of chinese ceramic marks? All your help is greatly appreciated. .

The current (2010) version of Davison's reference has this mark essentially as No. 3319. However, the handkbook's mark has less variance than what your example shows in its 'Zhong' character. I believe this reflects the handbook's Republic-Period (1912-49) cut-off date for entries.

I'm aware of no other more versatile source of identification information on Chinese porcelain markings for someone with little or no training in the language. The only other volume of recent vintage I've seen is entirely in Chinese.

Your skills in identifying these markings should improve with practice. And if you get stuck on a mark, you still have this forum as a fallback source.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,
Thank you for your help. I passed right over it when I was searching through the book. I have such appreciation of Chinese art in porcelean and watercolors, so being a novice, it will take years for me to learn and to further understand and appreciate it to help me build my collection. The help you and everyone provide here is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Does the color of the marking has anything to do with the age? I have a rice grain bowl with similar marking in blue.. did they use different colors for different periods?
