I have acquired a piece of work that I think is an origanl by John Luke Eastman. I have only found one website that gives me any info. The site only features 10 pieces for sale. Has anyone heard of him or know where I can go to find out more.

I have an original John L. Eastman painting and have also been trying to find more info. A description for a print for sale on Ebay, stated that some of his originals hang in the homes of Michael Jackson and Burt Reynolds - ? Found a website but it looked to be quite dated and have since lost track of it. Would appreciate being copied on any information anyone might have. Thank you. Sylvander

I have two ? Prints by John Luke Eastman. They are squares painted with a circular design inthe middle. Background is orange (looks like a matt) but I believe they are unsigned prints. Some of his other work I have seen online seem like Peter Max. I'd like to know more about him?

I have two prints by John Luke Eastman, one of which is signed and numbered, dated 1977. The signed one is tall and narrow of a figure standing on an orb with stars, with several other orbs or globes (planets?). The background is black, and the colors are turquoise, chocolate brown, chartreuse, olive and dark blue. It quotes the first line of Psalm 19 ("The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth his handyworks.") I bought it in 1983 at a charity art auction in the Detroit area.

I, too, would like to know more about him and sources for his works.

Much of the information that I have on Eastman is from this website.

Is it a signed print? I have no idea of the value, but I am interested in it. If you determine a price, if possible, please let me know before you put it on Ebay.

Yes it is signed and taped to the back of the mat is a business card that reads "john luke Eastman 1856 n. Edgemont St. Apt 2 LA 90027 phone 667-2571
It is a thirty year old card but maybe LA based galleries would know something.

I have six of his here on my wall. I know he is still around, and LA-based artist since the late 1960's. He also did a GREAT album cover for one band _ I don't have it, so maybe a search will turn it up. I'd love to see more of his work - everyone seems to like it. There are elements of 1930's with psychedelic, beautiful.

I have 6 of his paintings, which I acquired directly from John himself @ art shows throughout Az and Ca. I used to have his home phone # but it has been disconnected. I went out to Westwood about 14-15 years ago and cked up a painting from him that I special ordered. I think that was the last time I saw him. I absolutely love his work.

Are there any tell tale signs as to if I have an original or not? I don't know anything about him and I found this piece I have on the street of NYC.

All of his paintings have a "Verse" or "Quote" somewhere within the actual painting.

I have a print by John L. Eastman that is signed and numbered 150/500 dated 1979. Also in pencil is "TO JIM". The is entitled? "LOVE BEARS ALL THINGS. BELIEVES ALL THINGS, HOPES ALL THINGS. ENDURES ALL THINGS...LOVE NEVER ENDS." The colored print(framed and in mint condition) depicts what appears to be twin or mirror images of women with stars in their hair and two large yellow stars in the center. I'd like to have some idea of the value before I place on E-BAY. Thanks!!

Here is some info about JOHN LUKE EASTMAN that I obtained from a brochure included with his work. There is a Japanese art gallery that is featuring a large amount of his work, it begins with an L, but I can't find the name again from the search I did. Hope this helps.

EASTMAN is a southern California artist whose unique style and creative outputs began to gain attention during the mid-sixties in California. Notable collections then included celebrities such as Raquel Welch, Liza Minelli, Barbara Anderson and Tony Perkins.

By the early seventies the name EASTMAN has gradually found its way into most major galleries across the country. The momentum is accelerating now towards the international scene . . . Japan, South America, Middle East and European countries are all receiving his works with great enthusiasm.

A graduate of UCLA with a degree in graphic arts, he was a successful fashion illustrator and art director for a prestigious department store in L.A., before turning his full attention to fine art. Over the past decade [note: I purchased my piece in 1980, so this past decade refers to the 70s], he has created and mastered the unique style that is currently found in his limited edition silk-screen graphics. A versatile artist, who has illustrated many record and book covers, he refers to his style as the 5th dimension or beautiful distortion. The qualities he seeks to impart through his works are fluidity of movement, a feeling of spatiality, weightlessness and beautiful color.

Eternal Reflections

I have taken two of the worlds most beautiful things, he explains. Women and the Scriptures and transposed them onto paper. Sounds simple the way he explains it. But it isnt. EASTMAN admits that it is one-quarter faith, and three-quarters perspiration.

He traveled to Europe for extended periods; always experimenting with various media: pastels, pencil, oil, pen& ink and water color inks. When he was ready, he returned home to Southern California to marry and raise a family.

I guess Im hung up on beautiful women. I put them on a pedestal. I cannot draw a cross woman, says John. Although from time to time, I may exaggerate features to express a life that is not always a bed of rosesmy desire was to express women in fantasy and with imagination envolvement.

There is an added dimension to EASTMANS work that demands a close inspection. As you move closer to the figures in the painting, one discovers quotations from the Old and New Testament, in small but legible hand lettering, around the bottom of the painting.

These Scriptures that I use in my paintings are very meaningful to me, John reveals. In some instances I will take the quote and create a painting from those inspiring words. Occasionally, it will be the reverse, the painting is made and then the passage will come to mind. Reflecting back, he adds, Perhaps I had the verse there all the time. In my subconscious, you know.

John Luke Eastman is mighty happy about his success and the fact that he beat the odds. And you know what? It couldnt have happened to a more deserving artist.

Hi Melinda, My family first met John Eastman at an art festival in Palm Springs, during Spring break.Although he had a lot of people in his booth,he was very attentive to my daughter, and her cousin, both of which were facinated by his work,at the tender ages of 6,and 7. We had seen him there in years past, but this was the first time we stopped to talk. Both my brother, and I bought a print each.We never thought much about them, other than we liked his style. This was the early 90's.I believe.A few months ago,I was at the Alameda Point Antique Faire, and saw one of Mr. Eastman's prints for sale. I recognized it from 50 feet away.I bought it of course, and thus regenerated my interest in his work. Last week,I was driving North, from the Bay area to my home in Portland.I stopped at an antique store, and noticed another one of his works, which was a silk screen print. I figured this was an omen,so I bought it as well. The two recent acquisitions are now proudly displayed in my family room, and the first one bought is hanging in a special place of honor in the hallway. So that's my John Eastman story. I don't care so much about the value, unless they are so valuable that I should list them on my homeowner's insurance,in case of a loss.I guess the screen print of the lady standing on a ball with stars,# 202,of 250,is worth doing more research on.
Thankyou for your time. Any other info ,like where is he now?,would be appreciated.
Steve Oppenheim

I recently bought a lady's "flea market" items in total as she was closing up and have found a print by John Eastman, titled the "track star" do you have any idea of the value of his work. My wife absolutely loves this print. Thank you

I have no idea what Mr. Eastman's works are valued at.I bought mine at a flea market,as well, and at an antique store, where they had no idea of value, just as a print in a nice frame. I know what I paid for the ones I bought directly from Mr. Eastman at an art fair in Palm Springs many years ago. It would be nice to find a gallery listing of his recently sold prints,or any which may have sold on E-Bay.

I just received an original of Eastmans, but it is not signed. There is script on the inside of the piece, with his name. Its a beautiful piece, and I want to list it on ebay, but have no clue what to start the bidding at. Anyone ever find out what the value is on his art?

I checked E-Bay to see John Eastman pics. I found a site with many of his for sale, . I saw one for $199.00, it did not sell. I have the feeling it is a one time buyer thing, where people like us meet the artisrt, and like the work and buy it for personal reasons, not as an investment. It may be some time before they have a value of their own. Even Peter Max prints are just so so in resale. It may be like Maxfield Parrish, where it was many years before his work became hot,and following the increased value of Parrish prints, those of Fox ,who had a similar style, rose in value, but never as high as the same size of Parrish ones.
Value is in the eye of the beholder, and the bidder. The resale of Eastman prints does not bode well as an investment at this time I'm affraid.Just enjoy them for the art that they represent.

Yes..I too looked at ebay, but I couldnt find anything. Finally did when I put in LUKE instead of just L.
Those were all BIN's, so we dont know who bought them since its not really an auction that seller is offering. Some were pricey, yes. I guess I need to do a bit more research. Maxfield Parrish is dime a dozen now, sad to say.

Why don't you go to his web site and find out what he is selling them for. They are not scarce. He prints as many as he can sell, but does not say anything about this because he wants to get enough money for them to make a living or whatever. He would rather that folks buy from him rather than on auction sites or in shops.

This forum is not for buying and selling items. These prints are not Asian art, although the artist has some Asian genetic heritage.

Best regards,
Judy

I, too, have a couple of Eastman prints which I bought at a wonderful little gallery about 30 years ago. Interestingly, the one in my living room does not have any quotation on it.

When I Google-d John L Eastman, this was the best site which came up (I thought it was a mistake with the "Asian Arts" title!). However, there was no website listed for him. Does anybody know the URL for that?

Thank you!

Hi Mary, I too have several John Eastman works. Two are signed/numbered and one is a lithograph. I found quite a bit of information about this most beloved artist from johnlukeeastman.net. THis site is an art gallery in Los Angeles and the owner is a personal friend of John Eastman. There are pictures of him as well as a bit of history of his work. I called the gallery phone # given on the site and had a nice chat with "Momo". He sells Mr. Eastman's screen prints, lithographs and originals, he also visits him on a weekly basis. Hope this helps you. The site has some wonderful examples of his work.

Do you know the names of the pieces you have? I am espically drawn to the 1970's silkscreens. In particular Stretching Arm.If you have pictures you could share that would be helpful too. Thanks!
