Subject:Jade priest
Posted By: Martin Hansen Sun, Feb 19, 2012 IP: 87.249.165.47

Hello dear Forun
I obtained this statue of what I assume is a buddhist munk made out of green jade.
It is 25 cm hight, and mounted on a wooden plate.
I find no initials of any kind, but thind it looks Chineese.
Has anyone sen one of these before, know where it comes from and how old it is?

We need a close up of the face, and pictures of different angles. Also, please do a scratch test, using a strong needle, making a 2-3 mm scratch, then tell us is this tiny line is white or black.

Looking at it again, I am certain that this is not Jade of any sort, but a softer stone and modern.

3 more pictures
It has quite many scratches. these are white, and if I take a needle and make a fresh, that one is white as well.
Interesting reading about the Taoist monks. Made me even more happy to have it in my little oriental corner. Thx.

Chinese and not a priest nor a monk. This is "shou", the deity of Longevity, one of the 3 attributes of good life: good fortune (fu), prosperity (lu) and longevity (shou).

That is the God of Longevity, 壽星 Shou Xing or 壽星公 Shou Xing Gong

You can always identify him by his carrying a long walking stick in one hand and a peach of immortality in his other hand.

This is a modern piece, probably made of some types of inferior soft stone, not a bad conversational piece though.

Indeed, this is a very soft Serpentine or even softer stone.

Thank you for some very interesting information. I will remember to worship my Shou Xing on birthdays.
I assume value is inferior due to not jade and a newer statuet.
