Hello experts there,

I owned a wood stand carved Silver and scroll weight carved Dragon & Phoenix. Kindly help me to identify what kind of woods?

Was this made by Hongmu, Jichimu or Huanghuali?

Hi,

I am a bit confused as to which photo is referred to as 2 or 3? Jim, I must admit that none looks like Walnut to me. I have quite a few pieces from Shanxi, Gansu and Fujian made of Walnut in my collection and through 15 years of dealing I have never seen Gansu or Shanxi Walnut with such pronounced flames in the wood. I steer away from expressing an opinion based on photos but in my mind these pieces are not Walnut.

Dinh, I would discard Jichimu (Chicken-wing) as weLl as the grain is too prominent and does not have a close enough flecked grain. I can't see it being Tilie-mu either so I suppose that leaves HHL or Hongmu (Redwood).

Not much but just my view.

Best
JJ

Many thanks JJ for your time and contribution!

After I spent hold month to check and look properly this item, I would also think it is either HHL and Suanzhi (Hong Mu).

But some people here said that my Weight Scroll is made by HongMu then I think the stand should be HHL? but it doesnt have its taste/ smell?

Hope to have more answers for above items from you all.

Best,

Dinh

First of all let's get this straight..
In my opinion,

Unusual timber to be used in China of this period.
has many names, hongmu not one of them.
maccasar ebony; coromandel; marblewood; verigated ebony; etc.. Dyosporos genera. A number of Asian persimmon specie trees produce this wood. Difficult with any certainty to say which of the variety it is, but seems unlikely to be anything else. More common in Japanese furniture than in Chinese. The greater number of commercial coromandel species exploited to extinction approx 200 yrs back. They didn't call it the Coromandel coast for nothing. Some still available:

The other, I would think Pterocarpus soyauxii, or African zitan if you like.. A bit of a perversion of the term Zitan, and strictly speaking should be referred to as Hongmu, as is an imported generic, and implication of the term Zitan imperial Chinese. still marketed as African zitan despite this. commonly used as a timber of choice for Chinese urhus, as has very similar tonal characteristics. remarkably similar to zitan in many ways, even in it's shimmering grain structure in certain areas, although less pronounced, but is more difficult to work; and requires staining to produce red sandalwood effect. lacks purple hue to the tannin.

I have a table with similar wood grain as the 4th pic, and it may be HHL.
