Subject:Help Identifying Carved Shell Art
Posted By: Nick Wed, Mar 21, 2012 IP: 76.108.33.51

Can anyone help me to identify these pieces. They seem to be made from pieces of shell carved out. Really nice. 2 pieces with different writing on them and some sort of stamp/seal. Maybe someone can translate it? Thanks

Nick, beautiful pieces. Do you know if there's a specific name for this type of artwork/if its from a certain region? I have also listed a picture with similar type carvings but different artists' stamp & signature. (Search message board 'shell picture' listed Feb13th)

i know nothing about them yet. someone on the message board said they are probably plastic. they look really nice for plastic if that is what they are. hopefully someone can read what it says or knows what they truly are

i have 3 of similar make and markings. One is 18" x29.5" and 2-7"x14". they are not plastic. One of the frames has 2 birds' tails broke off and they sound like glass when thet slide around or when flipped over upside down. I have not been able to find much on them either. I was going to sell them them but don't know there worth.pics are too big to load here. sorry

I have a four piece set of Chinese Shell Carving pictures.I also wanted to sell them and cannot seem to find much info.Am not able to post pics..I did see something similar on Amazon and they were worth about $40 a piece..They are very heavy pieces and very detailed.I assumed they would be worth more.

Don't know much - been buying them for a while on craigslist, etsy and a local thrift store (apparently they get the inventory when local asian restaurants close down). They are real shell, generally made from abalone and most available today date to the 1960's when the "Tiki" "Asian" themes were big (think Shirley McClaine in "My Geisha" - 1962). For all their complexity, they sell for very little - anywhere from $10-40 a piece depending on condition and design. As an example, I bought two large (27x35) complex peacock/mate/trees/floral pictures for $20/each. They are common and easy to find - I buy them because they are fascinating!
