Subject:2 Japanese Silk Paintings : Young Sima Guang ... more info please?
Posted By: Sat, Jul 07, 2012 IP: 173.22.159.211

Hello,

I inherited a lot of art from my father a few years back and have slowly been researching everything.

I have 2 Japanese silk paintings that I would like to know more about. One of them I have learned is a depiction of Young Sima Guang breaking the water jar. Sima was a reputed politician in the Northern Sung. A legend tells that young Sima rescued another child by breaking the water jar into which he fell.

The other painting I know nothing about.

I do not know the artist or how old either of these are, except that they appear to be quite old and were with a lot of other very old artwork from around the world.

I have the photos uploaded to my PhotoBucket account and thought it might just be easier to link to those:

Close-up images of the writings.

Images of the full paintings.

Thank you for any info you can offer,
Richard

The first two paintings look Chinese to me. The last one is a Hiroshige woodblock print from his famous "53 Stations of the Tokaido Road" series. This one is station #44, Yokkaichi.

The Hiroshige print looks like it's been creped (chirimen-e), indication a later edition.
