Subject:Need help identifying this Asian brass/bronze item
Posted By: Fri, Aug 24, 2012 IP: 97.88.140.141

Can anyone help me out identifying this? It's made of brass, possibly bronze and it measures about 6" across at the base. Someone told me they believe it's a saddle stirrup, but I'm not sure. I'm curious as to what it is, as well as where and when it may have been made. Thank you.

Hello,

Yes, it's a stirrup of Chinese BC style but of recent manufacture.

How recent would you say? And how would I know if it's brass or bronze?
Thanks.

Hi David,

Indeed a stirrup - I would say 19th Century, Chinese. They have become quite collectable lately - earlier examples are usually made from iron and sometimes inlaid with silver or with enamel detail. The latter often associated with the stepps of Mongolia / Tibet. First prize would be if you have a pair.

Hope this is of help.

Best
JJ

Based on tang-ming-qing stirrup design... Looks like brass but I wouldnt commit on a photo...
Stirrup design moved from simple bar design to footplate design somewhere around the tang dynasty I believe... Cerainly the bar design was in use throughout the han dynasty till post 6th century A.D...
I would say yours are around 200 years old as the weathering and patina seem natural for that age and it fits with the materials used..
