Subject:Korean Apothecary Cabinet
Posted By: Jim Wed, Oct 10, 2012 IP: 66.190.99.178

My understanding when I bought this cabinet about 30 years ago was that it is Korean, and an apothecary cabinet. Is this a correct assumption or am I astray? Tjanks for any comments, Jim

Hi Jim, your assumption is correct.

Thank you Matt, any other details available, eg. age, meaning of characters on the drawers, are they for herbs?

Yes herbs, roots, flowers but also dried animal parts and the like. The inscriptions on the drawers indicate what is inside unfortunately I can't read Chinese characters. For age I would say somewhere around the mid 20th century. Your chest is quite a bit smaller than the usual medicine chests, the wing top is quite unusual for this type of furniture as is this type of door on the bottom.
