Subject:Need help in identifying the mark. Thank You
Posted By: Ryan Wed, Nov 14, 2012 IP: 111.94.30.180

Hello, I have several chinese seal scripts for my homework. Could anyone help with the translation and from which age or dynasty of writing? From left to right. There are 6 seals.

Best regards
Ryan

woah, what class are you taking that assigns this as homework? the one on the far right looks like a Xiang Yuanbian seal (a Ming collector), the third is a seal of the Qianlong emperor (Qing), and fourth from the right is an inventory seal from the Qianlong emperor's second catalog of paintings/calligraphy (also Qing). the others I don't know offhand.

sorry ryan I don't understand your questions very well, but in any case you should do your own homework if you want to learn anything. most of the characters on the seals are pretty close to standard script (kaishu), but some are more like seal script, some a bit more stylized than representative of some older historical era. the few characters that are different in simplified form don't really differ very much. you can figure it out.

I don't know how to find the dictionary for these characters, all there was is finding it the other way around, from simplified translated to seal script style. Could you tell me at least the writing or pinyin for all. That's what I need. Thanks.

yes, that is the challenge, isn't it? I have been thinking about making a reverse dictionary like that for a while but it seems like a hell of a lot of work for what may be a pretty small market.

ok, here's a little help, starting with the first seal on the right:

1. Xiang mo lin jian shang zhang (Xiang Yuanbian seal)

2. x jing shu zhai

3. san xi tang jing jian xi (Qianlong seal)

4. bao ji chong bian (Qianlong inventory seal)

5. x xian(?)

6. x shan (?)

1.项墨林(jian I cant find this one)赏章
2.梅(jing cant find)书(zhai cant find)
3.三希堂精(键 u mean this jian)玺
4.宝及重编
5.虎伯 (instead xian as u said)
6.秦公 (instead shan as u said)

pretty good, here are some things you are missing:

1. 项墨林鉴赏章
2。梅影书斋 (sorry, it's ying rather than jing; and your seal simplifies zhai)
3。三希堂精鉴玺
4. correct
5. good
6. not sure of 秦 but 公 is right
