Subject:Black Shelled Jade Sculpture; Hongshan Culture?
Posted By: Jac Sat, Jun 01, 2013 IP: 218.212.242.167

Attached is a very interesting video showing pictures of black shelled jades, some with motifs similar to artifacts from Hongshan culture.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kh4UcguUbVo

There is a book published by the presenter in the video shown in this link:

The pictures below are from the book, taken from the link above.

Any black shelled jade collector visiting this forum? Any wisdom, information, pictures to share?

I think I have one or two or three archaic black jades. Not sure as I am not an expert on black jade or any jade.

Sounds like an elaborate hoax to me.

This whole story has been concocted to try to create a "history" for this forgery outfit. It is aimed at the lunatic fringe, with stories of marijuana worship, space alien technology, new age goddess stuff that appropriates the name of a traditional folk deity and 14,000 year old "jade" sculptures, that have been authenticated by scraping some paint off of them. Can you imagine anyone painting jade? If China has take some of these as national treasures, as the article claims, then Chinese art scholarship is in serious trouble.

These things are terrible distractions to the study of real neolithic jade. I think there is an entire private "museum" in Beijing devoted to this junk.

I don't know a lot about black jade.

The videos listed above could help you in your search for more info.

The author of the book does not know how to identify genuine Hongshan Culture objects, IMO.

Take a look at the sculptures below, taken from his video. These are obvious modern fakes as ancient humans do not perform surgery to enhance their breasts.

I have seen many large "black shelled jade" sculptures for sale here in Singapore. I did not buy any because I believed they are fakes.

got it , interesting point .Even thou i thougth other ancient cultures garved big breasted women (and big butts too).
Iwatched the video and it rises many questions .
The only thing i still am curious about is about C14 test made on some of those objects. At the beginning i though was not possible (since it is jade)but due to the peculiar surface of the art craft it contain some organic particles (they said the blak skin jade is derived apparently by a kind of osmosis with the suroounded soil in which was buried ...sorry i don't know the scientific term for that reaction)

I am really puzzled only about this.
here is a link where you may find the test ( i have it on jpg but i dont know how to send it here)

Attached is a linked to an article on the production methods of fake black jades, for information.

I would not rule out the possibility that are genuine black neolithic jade pieces although I believe most are copies made to deceive collectors. If there are no authentic black neolithic jades, would there be so many black fakes?

I myself find it difficult to believe the black piece shown below could be from the Hongshan culture. Apparently it is in the collection of a museum in China, if I am not wrong.

Please do not kill yourself if you do not like this one.
