Subject:Bronze Elephant Makers Mark
Posted By: Bob K Thu, Nov 07, 2013 IP: 49.181.236.11

Hello,

I have a bronze elephant that was my grandfathers, it has a mark on its belly, I am curious as to who made it, and any other information known possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The mark reads "Tsunemitsu" in Japanese. See the link for relevant information (you may have to sign up with the auction site to obtain complete data). Next time, please show a complete image of such objects along with their marks, as the same characters are used in China, Japan and Korea, leaving stylistic clues as the only ready basis to determine origins and assess the likelihood of forgery.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill H,

Firstly thank you for taking the time to reply to my query about the mark.

I have now included a picture of the elephant that the mark is on. I looked at the link that was supplied by you, and it is the same elephant, except for one difference. The base that the elephant sits on is a smooth one in the picture, the one I have sits on a carved dark timber base, where the rear leg rests in a groove thereby stopping it from rocking when touched unlike the base in the link picture.

Hi,
I wonder if anyone could advise on the history relating to the images of this elephant and its makers mark. This was handed down to me through the family from my late uncle and I really would love to know how he acquired it and something of its history if at all possible.

Thank you in anticipation.
