Thanks!

You need to do a scratch test. With a strong needle, make a 1-2 mm scratch , then tell us if is is a white or black scratch.

Hi Ernest!
I did the scratch test, and I get no mark, neither black nor white!

You have to increase the pressure until you see a scratch.

Hi Ernerst: I made more pressure, and I get a tiny light brown line....neither black nor white

How did you do your scratch test?
How big is your piece? I kept looking at it, it is really difficult to tell what it was made of by its pictures, but I am really not that impressed with its material or its carving. Better pictures taken under sunlight? Thanks.

Hi Adam, I bought it like jade...but ok, it seems I´ve got a new soapstone then!
Thansk!

It does not look like soap stone to me. That is why better pictures (taken under natural sun light) and correct scratch test result are needed.

I post more pics.
Scratch test was a light brown line.
I did it 3 times, always the same, and with a lot of pressure.

Thanks!

Hi Ernest! I was away a long time, I¨ve just answered Super.
!´ve sold the piece to a collector.
Anyway, I dindn´t scratched it in the brownish area.
Both times I did the scratch test I´ve got something between gray and brown.
I¨ll never know exactly what it was.

Thanks!

I would like to ask you some follow-up questions when you have time to answer:

(1) What is the size(dimension) and weight of your piece?
(2) What did you use to scratch your piece with?
Can you show us a picture of the line that was made by your scratch?
(3) What is the actual color of your piece? It looks much lighter in the second set of your pictures. Celadon (light green) and white color pieces do not always show their real colors on pictures and may look different on different monitors.

Thanks.

Super

Hi Super!, sorry for the delay in answering, but I was sailing from North America to Antarctica! (something great.
I sold the piece to a collector before my trip, together with some corals figurines.
Anyway it was 30 cms height, I scratched it with a shape knife and also with a big stainless steel needle, the line was neither white nor black (I should say between brown and gray may be)
And the color I think the first pictures were more real than the second ones.
This man made scratch test and came also with a scale a bought it, if it was jade or not, I really don´t know!
Thanks for your help anyway!

Luis

I have a very similar figurine, carved stone glued to a wood stand much like your stand.
I have always assumed it was soap stone. Anything more valuable would have been presented with much more respect...
