Subject:Need help indentify the wood.
Posted By: Chuck Sat, Mar 01, 2014 IP: 96.251.176.97

I am still confused what kind of wood in these pictures. I have been told it is stripe ebony, macassar ebony, huanghuali, and rosewood. I need experts help. I would appreciate your help.

COROMANDEL
well - whoever told you it was stripy ebony was spot on but this is the common name. Reason being the species botanic name Dyospyros melanoxyon. Dyospyros in Greek means 'hard to find', and yes the genera produce, apart from a vauable crop of persimmon fruits - various species of ebony.

Whoever told you it is huanghuali is someone who's opinion on tropical hardwoods should not be taken with anything other than a large dose of salt. Huanghuali it is not, in fact it is highly unlikely Chinese at all. Japanese most probably & although you haven't posted an image of the entire piece - so - but anyway, likely made for the Chinese market.
