Subject:Foo Dogs - what are these made of?
Posted By: Cathy Shapiro Mon, Mar 17, 2014 IP: 75.66.57.80

Hi,
I just bought these foo dog bookends at an elderly ladies estate sale. They are very heavy - each one weights 1 pound and 14 ounces. They measure 3 1/2 inches long by two inches wide by five inches tall.

The color is brown and they appear to be stained. But the ears were broken off one and they are obviously made of some sort of stone.

There is a similar looking set on ebay right now that the person is calling nephrite jade. I've included the link.

Does anyone know what these are made of?

thanks!

Those are made from Serpentine, a much softer stone than Jade.
The link does not work....

Hi Earnest,

Thanks very much - I think you are right - that it's serpentine stone. I can't tell if it's the natural color of the stone or if it is just really dirty or if it's lightly stained - but regardless I have already grown quite fond of them.

Thanks again

If you look at the bottom and find what appear to be sanding marks then these are lost wax resin castings. If you do not, they are still almost certainly the same. Regards, Jim

The broken ear is the clue.
