Subject:Asian art apraisal online course?
Posted By: Luis Fri, Mar 28, 2014 IP: 190.136.124.165

Hi: does anybody know about any online course, or any kind of information source to learn about asian art? I should like to learn a little about distinguishing fakes from real pieces, ages, quaiities and prices.
I was told the best way to learn is to be able to be in contact with many pieces, but on the other hand I think it should be very helpful to get some "theory" from different sources.
Any advice is welcomed, many thanks!

Luis

I don't know of an online course, but there are a few good books depending on the material you want authenticate (paintings? calligraphy? porcelain? etc). there are also instructive exhibition catalogs that put genuine and fake works side by side.

Hi Rat! Thanks for your answer.
I should like to study all areas, but if I have to choose where to start I prefer "chinese works of art", that means for me jades, cloisonnés, lacquers, ceramic and porcelains.
Painting in my second target.
Let me know is possible where to find the info you mention.
Thanks!

I don't know of sources for most of those areas, but there are a few books that compare genuine and fake ceramic examples, and a few more on paintings. Typing "fake" into the Paragon Books website pulls up a few examples in jade, bronze, etc. There was a large exhibition of genuine and fake ceramics in China perhaps a decade or so ago now that had a good catalog; a similar exhibition of genuine and fake paintings held in 1993 or so has just been reprinted in China. You might email Paragon or even Hanshantang asking for their recommendations in each medium you are interested in.

Books are a good source of information, as well as auction sites that have archives for sold items. This is a good education with what is valuable and is not.
Most books do not cover fakes, recent reproductions, or modern products. Which is the most difficult area to become experienced in.
Finding collector's site can help, as well as identification sites.
Many people have taken the time to share their knowledge for free on the internet.
It is a long slow process.

The best way to find sites is to use a google search about a particular item you wish to learn about, go to the images, and click on the best pieces you see.
Ebay is actually quite educational as far as fakes, and the real thing, I check it often. Got to completed sales, and start with most expensive for an type of item, then you will learn what is usually worth more, most likely genuine and valuable.
You can do the same with liveauctioneers.com, they have an archive of sold items that spans many years from auction houses in the USA usually.
This site here, can be helpful, lots of information on decorative items.
