Subject:How old is this jade?
Posted By: Corey Fri, Mar 28, 2014 IP: 193.169.154.225

I recently stumbled upon an article from a chinese newspaper with an image of a green jade ornament quite similar to one I own, but made in a yellow jade pebble material.

Unfortunately there is no desription of the images in the article, so if someone here has any idea of what dynasty it belongs to, or has a reference to a similar one, it would be awesome!

Thank you very much!

/Corey

Qing dynasty archaistic...18th-19th Century.... (Appears to be a nice jadeite but due to bad colour scale could just as easily be a nice nephrite)

Perhaps show sharp photos of your little treasure.

I was also thinking Qing dynasty when I bought it, but the one I have seems to have been cleaned of a surface calcification plus the kind of scroll decorations are also seen on jades from the Song and Ming dynasties, so all in all I think it might be older.

I don't think the one shown here is made of jadeite. Jadeite and nephrite are quite easy to tell apart beacause jadeite always has glassy luster while nephrite has a waxy luster, but it can be off cause be difficult to tell from a photopgraph.

The material looks similair to the Qianlong seal sold at Bonhams. I like this lush green translucent jade material a lot.

This could well be Russian Jade

Was russian jade used in China in the 18th century?

I read that the Russian Jade was in use during the 19th Century

It could also be canadian jade which has been exported to China for at least two centuries. But I belive a smiliar kind of jade also comes from Taiwan although I'm not sure.

Canadian Jade and Taiwanese Jade look somewhat similar, but the Russian Jade in general looks better. Exception: Polar Jade.

Unfortunately my digital camera is more than ten years old and I have to change batteries for every five good photos I make so I don't really use it. I have a print of the sellers photo that I can scan, but it's probably gonna be a low qualty image.

To try to attribute any jade carvings based on a single low definition picture is foolhardy

Compare with #1214 in Christie's catalog of 19 September 1013. This one did not sell !!

Have you got the physical catalogue? The fact that this lot was the only one that didn't sell is not a good sign. Was the carving identical or just "comparable", and what color was the jade? Also what century was it dated to?

The Lizzadro Collection is a very importent collection btw. Yesterday I was very happy to own a jade similar to one of his, but I dont think I'll buy the catalogue though. I'm more focused on the one shown her, what collection it's from and what book it's depicted in, etc..

The motive is a representation of the ancĂent imagination of a dragon emerging from a cloud, btw.

Found lot 1214 at artvalue.com. That one doesn't look similar to the one shown here at all. The one I have and the one here are nearly identical.
