Subject:Large carved root Chinese, japanese, Indonesian ???

Can anyone help me please? What is shown here. and from what country would this piece come. It is very large 90cm and weighs 8Kg. Thanks

As I have said elsewhere, this is most probably Indonesian, and more specifically, from the island of Bali.

This kind of grotesque humour is often found on the island, and here we have a woman in the throws of childbirth - in this case twins, who have presented at the same time.

The subject chosen by the carver was probably arrived at from the natural formation of the piece of wood itself.
