Subject:Is there an iPhone app to scan Chinese and Japanese markings?
Posted By: Cynthia Bianchi Sun, Mar 30, 2014 IP: 184.36.79.63

Is there an iPhone app to scan Chinese and/or Japanese markings? We have several pieces of porcelain which appear to be marked/signed. We do not read Chinese or Japanese. Is there an iPhone app that we could use for translation appropriate for antique markings? Thanks for any assistance.

Just search Google for "Chinese digital character scanner" and you'll get responses for a number of models including pen scanners from major companies, such as Amazon. The downside with all scanners seems to be that they are meant to scan standard printed Chinese, like in newspapers or magazines. I didn't see anything for cursive or other esoteric character forms that you'll find used for porcelain markings. I imagine that anything programmable that scans Chinese should be able to scan Japanese if you have the right software.

Best regards,

Bill H.
