Subject:Help With Translation of Signature on Japanese Seated Bronze Bijin (Geisha)
Posted By: Joe Benevides Mon, Apr 14, 2014 IP: 67.182.107.188

Trying this again. Originally posted back in 2012, but with no luck. This type of Japanese signature is a tough one to translate. Is anyone able to make sense out of it?

the characters are 誠南作, but someone else will have to give you the right reading in Japanese for the artist's name.

Thanks! That was a big help! I know 作 is "work" or "made by", and another Forum member said 誠南 is Gyozan or Kyozan.

I was the other forum member, but realized too late that I had confused your post with another post. Guy has the right reading of your artist's name. Gyozan is the name on another person's ceramic piece (different characters). Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks. It reads 'Seinan saku' (made by Seinan). Very good quality.

Guy.

Thanks, Guy! I'm sure you're right about the signature. That's big help! I picked her up at an estate sale. It's amazing that she still has her original e-kagami (mirror) after 120+ years.
