Subject:Translate Japanese Characters
Posted By: David Downs Mon, Apr 14, 2014 IP: 24.246.177.165

I am hoping someone can translate the Japanese characters on this bronze chalice.

Thank you in advance for your help.

David

It reads 'Hônen shônin' (法然上人 - the Holy priest Honen).

See biographical Wiki page of this religious Buddhist reformer living in the 12th-13th centuries (Kamakura period).

If have no clue about the age of this object, honoring Honen (Edo period or earlier?).

Guy.

Thank you Guy, for your expertise and timely reply.

I certainly appreciate your translation of my bronze chalice and the link to Honen's Wikipedia information.

David
