Subject:Inherited Jade Collection-Going to need help!
Posted By: Sue Tue, Apr 22, 2014 IP: 76.176.80.91

My dad left myself and my sibling quite an extensive collection of Asian things - he loved jade the most. We lived in Bangkok in 1968-9, he was in Korea, Vietnam, Okinawa and traveled to (then) Burma and Laos. I am just starting to learn. Beginning with "Jade,A study in Chinese Archaeology & Religion", by Berthold Laufer. I found this group and hope to learn from the ground up! Thanks for your thoughts...hopefully I can put a bunch of pics out there...but here's a few to start. My dad often took jade to a jeweler in the US to have it framed in gold or silver for my mom to wear (as an explanation of some of the pics).

Group A and F: are two groups of pendents. in F: #1 I could not tell much, give me a shot of a different angle may give a better guess. F-2 and F-3, is peach and lingzhi(a kinda mushroom), meaning good luck and good longevity. F-4 is again lingzhi, meaning happy and good fortune.

A-1,A-4 and A-5, called gold enchanted with jade. A-2 and A-3 is silver enchanted with jade. A-3 and A-5 is budda. A-1 is pair of melon, which means many offspring and happiness. A-2 is flower. A-4 is peach and bat, which means good longevity and happy luck.

Hi, Sue:

Yea, the book by Laufer is a good book and he was frequently quoted by Prof. S. Howard Hansford in his own jade books. I am truly impressed by your willingness to learn more about jade and that speaks loudly your love for jade. Any time one becomes serious about any types of collectibles, one should always buy the books and study first.

It appears (I said appears) that most of your pieces posted here may be made of jadeite. I am not 100% sure about F1, A2 and A3. It is possible they can be made of nephrite or other stones. Very difficult to tell from a single low definition picture taken under artificial light.
I do not believe any of them are older than that of 20th century though.

Group A does appear to be jade pendants with either 14k gold or sterling frames? You may want to check their markings. I like A1 and F4 (as jewelery) the most and interested in seeing more of F1 and F3 (if cleaning them with mild soap and water is possible).

Are there any other pieces?

Thank you for sharing them with us, I can understand what they may mean to you. Incidentally, my father left me with a few unique (color) jadeite pendents after he passed away, not worth a lot of money, but meant a lot to me, and I put them inside my safe, left some of my more valuable Hetian jade carving around the house. Super

Thanks Mike05 and Super! I will definitely take more pics of pieces that you think are worth examining closer! Thank you both for your help! Here is a pic of one table full-in full sunlight outdoors. The small jades pendants in the lower right are just souvenirs we brought back from Bangkok as far as I know. The pendants with gold and silver...my dad had those frames done here in San Diego by a local jeweler. The Group H. pictured is my attempt to calculate weight with the density test (water). As I said I know nothing- was experimenting to see if I could do it but my math skills aren't too great! Super, sorry for the loss of your dad too but as with me I'm sure you cherish the gift of jade. As you can see my dad collected a lot in his 84 years. I'm just getting started - a LOT to learn about!!!

The two purple and the deeper green jadeite items are valuable if they are untreated.
You can contact Mason Kay for an appraisal and for testing.

I would also love to see those high value items you got in all the Christie's sales. Are they jade items? What are their lot numbers?
