Subject:tibetan thanka? ID character
Posted By: richard t Tue, Jun 17, 2014 IP: 180.216.15.105

hi all,

i think this is a tibetan thanka but not sure. i base my ID on what looks like a snow lion and script that is clearly not chinese or korean.

the painting is made on thick leather hide - back looks like suede. clearly very damaged, but wonderful attention to detail. if you look closely you can see script all over the painting.

is this a thanka? if so, how old is it? my guess is about 100 years.

i'd be also interested to know the name of the deity? or character riding the snow lion.

any other help most appreciated - i know nothing of these pieces. it was sold as a korean painting, which it is not.

thanking all in advance.

hi, no responses so far.

a friend has suggested the character on the snow lion is DORJE LEGPA - a protector, but that he usually rides a goat not snow lion.

can anyone confirm that this is dorje legpa?

thanks
richard
