Subject:Woodblock
Posted By: Dave C. Tue, Jun 17, 2014 IP: 50.163.44.24

I just purchased this woodblock print, and have done what research I could do, but could use some help from the forum. Who is the artist and year? The two prints measure 9"x 6.75"(koban). any other comments are welcome....Framed

I believe the artist of your print is Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada). Judging from the absence of any censor seal and the binding holes in the center it may comprised of two leaves taken from an Ehon (picture book).

The artist is Utagawa Kunisada (aka Toyokuni III) and the signature is (I think) hyoudai Toyokuni ga, which means the print dates from the early 1850s.

I need to correct my response above. I looked at Kunisada's signatures list crosseyed. The signature reads "gedai Toyokuni ga" and was used on woodblock print books in the 1850s. This confirms Willie's answer above (who observed the binding holes that I missed).

Cheers,
Stan

These appear to be two more pages from the same book.
