Subject:Origin and history of a beautiful brown and blue Asian vase
Posted By: Yolanda Masterson Fri, Jun 20, 2014 IP: 123.243.76.234

My grandmother opened her home in the late 1950's / early 1960's to students from SE Asia who were studying at the UNI of NSW (Australia) and away from their families. She visited the families of many of these students (those areas I know from newspaper articles include Malaya pre independence; Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong). Given her age and status as a married woman, she was very progressive. She brought home this vase from her travels and I would appreciate any insights to it's origins. Many thanks

Hallo Yolanda Masterson,

this vase is from China. the bottom stamped means: QING Dynasty. but actually it shoud be longer than that.should be Kangxi Dynasty. The neck and the bottom made of metal. the value is quite high for this vase.

Thank you very much for your response. I received conflicting information that it is Chenghua Nian Zhi and Chinese export from the early 20th century. I much prefer your analysis of its origins and my feeling based on how and when it came into our family is that it is a lot older. It has always looked aged and cracked based on feedback within the family, though I am aware this can be done deliberately. Can you recommend a reputable company that does sell this type of vase if we looked to sell it in the future? Thank you once again, Yolanda

Hallo Yolanda Masterson,

yes, you are right, the bottom's word is : Chenghua Nian Zhi(成化年製). Chenghua is the KING's name. it means made in Ming Dynasty. but i have consulted our company's specialist he said it was made in Qing Dynasty. not Ming Dynasty.sorry, i made a mistake. he said the value is around 150,000 USD. i believe you are not live in Hk, right? our company is in HK. but you can try some international auction company if it's more convenient to you. like Christies and sotheby's.
Thnaks.
