Subject:Japanese Butterfly Cup & Saucer artist signed
Posted By: Hank Mon, Jun 23, 2014 IP: 69.130.78.141

I have this cup and saucer very thin eggshell porcelain and has thousand faces plus butterfly design painted inside and outside of cup and even painted butterfly's on base of cup around signature.
What would be the total reading of the marks on base? I think they look similar to a mark i had seen on google books on Japanese marks, maybe Tokio by Okamura ? other words i researched look like Tsukuru Naniwa Osaka .I had seen cup and saucer like this with different designs on them but can't remember what the site said about their markings.

Hi Hank,

Nice set you have.
Ik think it's "Yokohama" (right/left) and top down "Nakamura" ...a well known name for this kind of (kutani-like)ware.
Dating; around Taisho period.

Regards,

Arjan

The mark reads horizontally (from the right to the left) 'Yokohama' and vertically 'Nakamura zô' (manufactured by Nakamura). Yokohama Kutani export ware, Meiji period.
