The jar has a mangled and misbegotten Ming mark of "Made during the Xuande Reign" (Xuande Nian Zhi - 宣德年製). The distortions probably resulted from using decal or transfer-printed patterns to create the mark and motif. I believe evidence of mechanical decoration also can be seen in design skips within the scepter-head diaper around the shoulder and some of the other pattern elements. Transfer decoration became commercially viable in China during the early 20th century, but I suspect this vase is a late 20th century product. The degradation of the mark looks to be caused by re-glazing and then overheating of a pre-glazed porcelain blank to which the decal was applied by one of the many porcelain decorating factories in China or elsewhere around Southeast Asia.

Best regards,

Bill H.
