Thank you for the responses.
I agree the shape of the cup is in the form of a sake cup washer, but I do question that it is a late 19th/early 20th century Japanese cup.
The cobalt blue is not typical for the period. The cobalt is of much higher quality and has a purplish tinge, very similar to early Kakiemon pieces.
Later Kakiemon and Imari underglazed blue have more of a grayer tone or midnight blue.
Also, the painting is executed better than anything in Japanese save for early Nangawara/Kakiemon pieces from the late 17th/early 18th cent. However, I question that it is early Kakiemon as the porcelain has a hard/glossary finish, not the silky matte finish typically seen. I've attached a photograph of one of my Kakiemon plates (c. 1690-1700) for comparison.
I don't think this is 19th/20th century Kakiemon or Arita as I have not seen anything similar to this given the cobalt quality and execution of the painting and foot ring, but I could be totally wrong.
Is it possible this is a Chinese piece made for the Japanese market?
Thank you again,
Matt
