Subject:Help with paintings on silk
Posted By: Ed W Sun, Jul 20, 2014 IP: 166.137.10.81 I have two paintings on silk. I know almost nothing about these except that my grandmother brought these back from Asia in the 1980s when she visited Bangkok, Hong Kong and Tokyo. I have always felt these were beautiful and value isn't really important as the true value for me is the memory of my grandmother. But someone asked me about the history of the paintings and what these works of art were worth and I had to truthfully answer I had no idea. My grandmother was a lover of Asian art and antiques and these would not have been picked up from a street vendor in my opinion but I could be surprised. Any help would be appreciated in what these are. |

Often the only original aspect of works like this was the face, which could be painted from a photo; the figures seated in formal imperial attire would be prepared in advance and the faces painted in by a professional artist for individual customers. Nowadays there is a market for ancestor portraits though, so they are sometimes mass produced for that market rather than painted to order. |
