Subject:Any information on this black lacquered urn/vase with removable top

Approximately 21 1/2 inches high, and 14 inches wide at widest point. No identifiable markings.

It is very light despite bulk, and has what appears to be gold painting on what I think is lacquer, or resin of some kind.

Does anyone have any idea as to its age, area of origination, and/or purpose?
