Subject:Grandmother left me this Japanese vase in her will..
Posted By: Strni Sat, Aug 09, 2014 IP: 50.97.94.47

Here is the knowledge I have: She bought it in Japan.

I am hopeful to learn anything I can about it such as if its real, when and where was it made, what its value is (if any).

It is 12.5" tall and the base has a diameter of 5.5"

Some parts of the paintings on the vase are raised.

I can take more photos if needed, thanks in advance for any assistance

Your vase is the Satsuma type and it could be about 100 years old.

I can't not read the signature on the base and I believe your picture is showing it upside down.

An unusual aspect of it is the amount of inscription painted around the shoulder.

If you could post photographs that are well lit, in focus, and with the signature on the base oriented correctly (turn 180 degrees) it will increase the chance of your obtaining assistance on this board.

A good way to determine value is once you have identified who made it and what the inscription signifies (whether a poem or a commemoration) then you do research for other items with the same attributes in which there are records of sale prices such as at auction houses.

Hi,this is not Satsuma, but 20th century Kutani porcelain with micro calligraphy. When I return from holiday, I will write more about it.

Michael - Thank you very much for your advice. I have spent hours researching this vase and could not find a Satsuma vase exactly similar. Also, I could not find even a remotely similar mark on the internet. I will take some more pictures soon, I accept that the lighting did not exactly do the vase justice.

Mat - Thank you for chiming in. I have researched Kutani porcelain and that does seem more likely than a Satsuma vase. Looking forward to your future posts about this vase. Let me know if I need to take more pictures of any specific part to help you.

Hi all,

Mat is right; it's Kutani and I think the mark (upside down) also reads "Kutani" in sealscript.

Regards,

Arjan

The mark indeed is upside down and appears (in line with Mat's comment) to be an archaic form of Kutani.

Hi, now that I am back from holiday I can give you more information. The signature that is shown on your 2nd photo to the left of the calligraphy seems to me to be the one of Tamura Kinsei, a very well known Kutani Artist who specialised in micro calligraphy. Compare the signature in this link that shows a Kutani censer with his calligraphy: http://www.trocadero.com/stores/zentner/items/1169860/item1169860.html .

I know this is an old post but I was wondering if you would be interested in selling this beautiful piece. This is indeed Kutani, with Saiji (micro calligraphy), most likely Showa era. I happen to collect these so please message me if there is an interest. Thanks!
