Subject:17th century Chinese painting
Posted By: melqart Sat, Aug 09, 2014 IP: 178.95.217.25

Hi Everyone,

This painting has been in my possession for a while. And as a newbie in Asian art have many questions about it. All the information I have comes from the British Museum notes on the backside of the framing:

British Museum
N85

Painted by:
YUN HSUAN
artist untraced
might be 17th century

Does anyone have any idea if that information is correct? If so can the artist be traced nowadays?
I would highly appreciate any thought and opinions.

Dimensions: 25 x 33,5 cm

Possibly, yes. The inscription reads "yunxuan hua", or "painted by Yunxuan, which is a nickname rather than the artist's actual name, whose surname appears in the first seal as Wang. There is a Qing artist named Wang Guoshi who used Yunxuan as a nickname but your seal suggests that your painter is using a different character for the surname Wang than his. Clearer photos of both seals would help identify your artist.

Unfortunately not, but perhaps the first seal reads Wang shi, or something like Mr. Wang. Can you try to add contrast to a closeup of the second seal please?

Dear rat,

Thank you very much for your help indeed.
Could you check the closeup photos of the seal with added contrast I have uploaded.

Thank you very much in advance.

It's been a while since the topic started, but i wonder if anyone could still help identify the artist? I hope that the close up photos of the seal are sufficient. If not I can try to take some better ones. I'm looking forward to any ideas. Thanks a lot in advance.
