Subject:Help appraising Chinese vase
Posted By: Taylor Wed, Aug 13, 2014 IP: 24.251.68.113

Greetings! I do not know any specific provenance information about this vase. My grandma gifted it to me, and she got it from one of her friends who "traveled a lot and collected things from all over." I hope someone here will be able to let me know for how much to expect to sell this vase. I am moving out of the country and must liquidate! Many thanks!

The vase looks like something that might have been painted at a factory somewhere in Southeast Asia, perhaps on a Chinese blank. If not that, then maybe made in China circa the mid-20th century for local consumption or export to Southeast Asia.

I've transplanted a picture of the base here to show what I recognize as a molded Chinese character for mountain (shan - 山) in the middle of the base amidst some other stamped or painted markings that make no sense to me. However, a couple of the blue smudges begin to look like a pair of fish with tails curling in opposite directions when enhanced with Photoshop. Nothing I recall seeing on a Chinese vase before, but perhaps someone else may recognize them.

Good luck,

Bill H.
