Subject:Blue underglaze plate with overglaze
Posted By: Jeff Wed, Aug 13, 2014 IP: 198.97.41.12

Blue underglaze with overglaze colors (red, green, purple, black). Also came from an old new england estate so no solid history. I believe it is old and Chinese, but I'm here to learn. Besides age and where it was made, the decoration makes me wonder if this was common everyday ware imported into New England? Or would the import cost have made it for special occasions? Or is it more likely to have been brought into the country later from a visit to the Far East?

Thanks!

THANK YOU. That was very helpful. I googled and found very similar pieces dated 1890, which is about when this appears to have been made. I've seen the newer Imari which has some similarities but this is the first older piece I've run into. I didn't know the older Imari had blue underglaze; and no gold paint either, which the more recent Imari seems to have lots of. I'm surprised there are so many pottery defects (bubbles, etc), but they must have really been churning this stuff out at that time for utilitarian use. Thanks again.
