Subject:53 Stations of the Tokaido Hiroshige Help
Posted By: Yi Sat, Aug 16, 2014 IP: 76.175.54.76

I recently bought this and was wondering if this had any actual value. Any kind of comment is welcomed. Thanks
Says it was printed in the 1850s.

Your print is from the Kichizo Edition of Hiroshige's "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido" and is the 4th station - Kanagawa. It is a chuban size about 7 by 10 inches and was printed about 1850. Your photo is fuzzy, but it looks like it is probably an original.

Your print is noticeably faded from being displayed thus reducing its value to collectors. Compare to one at the Boston MFA here:

As for value, a Hiroshige is always worth something. You now have enough information and can search and see if any have sold at auction recently or are for sale on websites.

Cheers,
Stan

Thanks for your reply and help. I'm having a little difficulty figuring out value, cause i see some selling $200-500 but at the same time there's many listed on ebay at $50-70. Are some prints rarer than others? How do you tell an original than a reprint?

Demand for the smaller (chuban) prints is lower than the oban size ones. Some prints are rarer and some are more sought after. Given condition, I'd put it at the lower end. To tell a reprint, you have to carefully compare a known original to the subject print. I did a quick comparison with the MFA one and saw nothing glaring. As I said above, yours is probably an original.

Cheers,
Stan
