Subject:2 woodblock prints and an original piece on silk
Posted By: Brett Sun, Aug 17, 2014 IP: 69.119.200.71

Hello, as always thanks for all the help with my other inquiries. I purchased these at an estate sale from a woman who was 100 and she purchased them in the early 1900's. I have a few questions. Mostly I want to know the artists and the dates of them. I paid $250 for the 3 of them and I wanted to know if this was a good price and if any of them have any value. Thanks in advance for all the help.

The second one is Utamaru. I don't know the others.

From looking at the one in bad condition up close I found that once again someone felt the need to write the artists name in pencil below the chop mark. They wrote Utamoro so I am assuming this is the artists name. The other two I am still looking to find more information, but I noticed that there is a mark on the bottom of the last one so I wanted to post a picture of it.

The second item is a print by Utmaro (as someone wrote near the signature). It is in really tough shape. An original in good condition would be worth a lot. The third item is a print by Toyokuni I. It is faded but in better condition than the Utamaro. The condition problems will make them a pretty hard sell to a collector.

Cheers,
Stan

Hello,

Thanks for all the comments so far. The woman selling them informed me that these came from a gallery in the early 1900's. She said that the most expensive one was the first one. She had the first one marked for $290, but I paid $140 for it. The Utamoro was marked at $60 but I paid $30, and the Toyokuni I was marked at $175 and I got it for $75. I love old Japanese art, but I don't know very much about it (I'm still learning). I appreciate all the help so far, and I would like to know more. I think the first one may be an earlier piece then the Utamoro and Toyokuni because of the way she had them priced, or this may just be because it was not a print like the other 2. If anyone could help me identify the first one I would really appreciate it, and once again thanks for the help.
