Subject:Kutani? Need help deciphering signature
Posted By: Gail Wed, Aug 20, 2014 IP: 100.0.64.252

Hi,
Any information on deciphering the signature on the bottom would be great.
When trying to do some research on this piece, I noticed that not many bowls have the elaborate edge trim that this one has. Is this unusual? If so, would it increase the value much?
Gail

"Kutani"
"Taniguchi" (a surname)

Hi Gail,

Yes this is Kutani. The upper (left tor right) characters reads "Kutani" and the middle ones (top-down) reads "Taniguchi" .Dating: around Taisho period. I'm not good in "values".

Regards,

Arjan

It reads 'Kutani' (horizontal) and 'Taniguchi' (vertical) refering to the decorator Taniguchi Komakichi (1873-1925), end of the Meiji- to Taisho period.

See also previous message.

Guy.
