Posted By: adam Fri, Aug 22, 2014 Although these are not Qianlong (Likely late 19th century)they should have a good value...The price of Daogang to Guangxu (Even quality republic)ceramics of good quality have sky rocketed recently... Although not reaching the heights of 18th century and earlier pieces, they are no longer cheap items |

Posted By: Bill H Thu, Sep 04, 2014 The Opium Wars drained a lot of Qing resources, affecting the flow of government-controlled imported commodities used by commercial porcelain factories during the Daoguang Reign. I believe cobalt was among them. The link below, to images of Daoguang porcelain markings on a well-known website, suggests to me that there's a wide range of differences in how coherent the strokes are among various marks. Makes me wonder if the raggedness in the mark shown here just represents the granular quality of domestic cobalt that the kilns were forced to use on occasion. Only a thought. |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Sep 05, 2014 Further to my preceding post, here are pictures of a 4.5 inch saucer or small bowl decorated for a marriage or anniversary in a famille rose floral scroll with bats, peaches and other flowerheads in the cavetto, while the under-rim scroll has lotuses and other flora in the guise of Chilong, bats, butterflies and additional insects. On the base, a six-character zhuanshu nianhao of Daoguang. |

Posted By: Bill H Sat, Sep 13, 2014 This Daoguang-era blue & white bowl has a mark with cobalt that fired almost as spotty, but still is fairly well written by hand. The piece comes from a dealer with impeccable credentials and to me seems to rate among the better quality commercial wares of the period. |
