Subject:Miniature Vase Information Sought
Posted By: Howard Dennis Thu, Aug 28, 2014 IP: 68.1.145.121

I've had this vase for years after finding it in a flea market. I don't know why but have always felt it was something special. Can anyone tell me what it is and what the mark says and approximate age?

Thanks for any help,
Howard Dennis

Ran out of room and couldn't post the most important image, the mark kanji.

This is a peachbloom glaze, oddly they are often catagorised along with Qing dynasty monochromes!!. I quite like this piece as the glaze looks fairly good for 18th century (They had difficulty reproducing this glaze in the late qing) the reign mark with no double circle is right for wares of this type...The only negative factors (Such as the slightly "Busy" colour scheme and the non-perfect footrim) can all be explained away due to the small size of the piece... Modern copies (Although they have now mastered the glaze) appear extremely sterile and the reign marks are often (Quite realistic) transfers..... These miniture vases never have tremendous value but certainly a decent value for something so small!!!

this is an imitation the very sought after peach-bloom glazed objects from the Kangxi reign period. There are a total of 8 accepted shapes for the Kangxi objects, this is a much more recent variant.

Rat & Adam, thanks for your response's. A previous post translated the mark and said it was a late Qing copy but has since removed that answer. I'm really confused know? Can anyone one else tell me what exactly the mark says so I can further study this piece. Also advice as to how I can find out for sure what this is and when it was made would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Howard,

The mark reads " Da Qing Kangxi nian zhi"

The mark is a Kangxi reign mark, but that in itself is virtually meaningless information. Instead try reading up about the glaze and the objects, eg:

A link to a similar shaped vase at British Museum, dated to the Qianlong period. The mark of your vase is Kangxi.

The link I posted is invalid. I'll see if I can post the image later on if I find the time to search through their online collection again.
But now you know there is a vase like yours in a museum. The glaze of it is also close to yours.

Corey, did you ever find that link to a vase like mine? I'd still like to find out exactly what I have if anyone has any ideas how I could do that? I've gotten conflicting opinions before and would like to be able solve this mystery once and for all.

Here it is. If you enter british museums website: "search online collection", type "qing" in the search box and click "images only", it's on page 6.
