Subject:Two Cloisonne Vases
Posted By: beadiste Sun, Aug 31, 2014 IP: 24.237.19.45

I have no questions about these, am just posting because I think these are nice items and would like others to be able to see them.
They're not large - about 9.5 inches tall.
The trellis vase on the left has "CHINA" scratched in hand lettering on the base, the red vase has a "Made in China" base stamp.
The level of precision and symmetry in the trellis vase is startling - whoever made this one really cared. The wire work is very fine, and there's scarcely a grain of enamel outside the wire outlines. The brownish tendrils are a mix of fine red and green enamel particles.
The taut proportions of the trellis vase also, I think, give a more monumental quality for its size than the red vase.

If anyone has a comment, please post.

From the heavy construction, these vases are circa 1920. Late Qing to Republic period - pre WWII.

Cheers

Doug

Subject:Thanks, Doug. Plus some similar pieces.

It really is a solid little thing, the weight is noticeable.
I had pretty much convinced myself it was from the decade you suggested, but then wondered if it could be earlier.
Seem to recollect idcloisonne mentioning somewhere that in her experiences a yellow background glaze is 20th century.
Oddly, I've encountered two other vases with that identical hand-scratched "CHINA" mark, so am guessing they came out of the same workshop, as they all have that early Republic look to them.
The vase with the floral pattern is the same shape as my yellow one.
