My father bought this in Shanghi about 25 years ago? It's around 7 in tall. Need help with seal ID, approx age, and what was it used for? Thanks

It's a tea caddy. Based on the limited information provided, if bought around 1985, its age could range from the the Republic Period (1912-1949) to around the time it was purchased.

This is more useful: dated equivalent to mid-autumn 1917, supposedly by a Guo Xiu?cheng painting in Jingdezhen.

The inscription contains a cyclical date of the second month of autumn, "dingsi" (丁巳), which for your canister likely would be 1917. The piece is signed as having been made at that time at Changjiang (昌江), a district in Jingdezhen, by Guo Youcheng (郭莜城). See the link for another piece of porcelain by Guo carried on a Chinese website. Oval marks such as seen on the base were common on Chinese porcelain during the early 20th century at Jingdezhen, though your mark essentially is unreadable.

Best regards,

Bill H.

your photos are poor quality but it looks like you have a canister to contain tea leaves before brewing, painted in Qianjiang style, which may date from the early decades of the 20th century. Ceramics in this style are popular collectibles at the moment given their decorative expressiveness and cheapness relative to imperial porcelains, but as a result are now widely faked. perhaps repost the other photos you meant to include
