This is among the more celebrated and reproduced pictures of Quail ever painted in Japan. It didn't get translated last time it appeared in the forum (link), and while I haven't gotten any smarter in that language, maybe there's someone else around who can take it on this time.

Good luck,

Bill H.

Bill H's seal picture reads 起 光 on the signature side. Someone will know the Japanese translation.

Thanks Tom, those characters produced a hit on Tosa Mitsuoki, a 17th century Japanese artist, who has a painting to his credit titled Quail and Millet, which seems to fit this painting. Here's the relevant Wikipedia.org page. Check the link pasted here for notes on the painting in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum:

Hard to tell anything specific from your photograph other than it is a Japanese painting of decent quality of the Chinese subject of quail and grain, words which in Chinese form a rebus for peace and harmony. Similar pictures have been collected in Japan since the Chinese Song dynasty, but this is more recent. How much more recent can't be easily determined from the photo you have posted.
