Subject:Large Painting from India?
Posted By: Mike in Thailand Fri, Sep 19, 2014 IP: 180.183.128.93

I ran across this painting in a market this morning. It appears to be from India, and is 5' wide by 6' tall. It is painted in fabric, which under magnification appears almost gauze like, loosely woven. From the pictures provided, can anyone give me any information on the age or origin of this piece? There were no markings on the front, and I did not look at the back. It is displayed wrapped in a layer of shrink wrap.

OK, I have since determined it to be Persian. It seems to be nicely done, but I have no experience in this area what so ever. Is there a market for this type of item? Is there any way of determining a date or age of the piece.?

Much art was made for the Indo-Persian or Mughal market in India before 1858, when the British brought and end to the Mughal dynasty due to its participation in rebellion. Kashmir continues to produce arts and crafts in the Indo-Persian style, though I haven't seen anything quite as nice as your painting identified as from there. So if I had to guess, I'd suppose this might be from the pre-1858 period.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill, Thanks so much for your comments. You are always helpful on this Forum. This is not something I would normally even pay attention to, except the size and quality seemed so much better than other pieces I have seen.
