Subject:Wood Sculpture - Girl with Watermelon
Posted By: Natalia Sat, Sep 20, 2014 IP: 99.236.31.60

I recently purchased a painted wood sculpture of a young girl resting on a watermelon. Odd, I know. I've had a hell of a time researching it and unfortunately have come up empty. The piece is made of solid wood and is quite heavy..it is unmarked as far as I can tell. It measures 14" long and 11.5" at the highest point. ANY information would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Natalia

This likely was manufactured in the third or fourth quarter of the 20th century by one of the wood crafts factories at Chiang Mai, in Northern Thailand. I've seen some identical to yours on eBay and labeled as Chinese, but I've been to some of the factories that make these items, as well as Thai markets where they're sold around Chiang Mai.

Best regards,

Bill H.

A common figure here in Thailand. They are made mostly in the North around Chang Mai for the tourist market.
