Subject:Rose Horse Vase?
Posted By: Jill Gilbert Fri, Sep 26, 2014 IP: 99.99.76.55

I picked this vase up at Goodwill and was wondering what the makers mark states and also the writing on the vase itself. It is a beautiful vase and was wondering if it indeed is an original. Thank you to whomever comments.

Jill,
I am not able to translate the script, but the high quality of your vase deserves a response. The depiction of the horses in your vase is a result of the Jesuit missionaries who lived in China in the 18th Century, especially Giusseppe Castiglione. His view of the Chinese horse in the act of biting has become an acceptable form of presentation, when before his time in China this aggressive behavior had never been depicted. Perhaps the inscription may offer a date as to when your vase was made.
