Subject:Chinese contemporary art
Posted By: Amanda Mon, Oct 06, 2014 IP: 85.170.21.222

Hello, all,

I'm a new poster here and would love to ask your opinions please.

I've read a lot recently in the press about the international growth of the Chinese contemporary art market. Last week also, Manchester's centre for Chinese contemporary art opened the largest related exhibition ever in Britain.

What do you think the reasons might be behind this rise? Is China becoming more global in its culture, and in its art? Or perhaps other reasons? Are international viewers/buyers becoming more receptive?

Would love to know. Thanks!

Amanda

I believe pictures speak louder than words so will submit this link to the Chinese contemporary art auction that Sotheby's held in Hong Kong this past weekend. In my dilettantish view, this market certainly isn't one where those without millions to spend dare tread, and I suspect that deep-pocketed Chinese buyers will continue to dominate it for at least the near term.

Best regards,

Bill H.
